“Waterproof” is a word that gets used loosely in the cover world, and that is the source of most of the confusion. Buyers ask the question reasonably — if it is going to rain on the spare for years, the cover should keep the water out. The answer is mostly yes, with some nuance about what each material actually does under different conditions.<\/p>\n
The honest version is that some of our materials are genuinely built to keep water out under sustained conditions, others handle daily rain just fine but are not designed for direct high-pressure water, and one is more accurately described as water-resistant rather than waterproof. None of them leak through during a normal drive in normal weather.<\/p>\n
Where this matters in practice: heavy rain, deep water crossings on the trail, prolonged coastal exposure, and the long-term question of whether the rim underneath stays corrosion-free. The right material for each situation is the one engineered for that level of exposure. Marine Grade Vinyl handles rain and snow under sustained outdoor conditions. PVC is water-resistant and handles regular outdoor weather well, though it is not rated as fully waterproof in every condition. PU Leather is water-resistant. Polyester is water-resistant but not waterproof. All four handle daily rain and snow without leaking through to the spare. Pressure washing is not recommended on any cover — clean by hand.<\/strong><\/p>\n Waterproof<\/strong> means rated to keep water out under sustained pressure — heavy rain or brief submersion. (Even on materials in this category, we do not recommend pressure washing the cover — clean it by hand.)<\/p>\n Water-resistant<\/strong> means the surface repels water on contact and through normal weather, but prolonged contact or high-pressure water can eventually penetrate.<\/p>\n For everyday driving in everyday weather, both ratings keep the spare dry. The difference matters when you are wading through a creek on the trail or planning around long-term coastal exposure. (Pressure washing is its own conversation: we do not recommend it on any cover, regardless of how weather-tough the material is.)<\/p>\n The spare tire itself does not really care about getting wet — rubber and steel handle moisture fine. What you are actually protecting is:<\/p>\n Not in normal rain. Polyester repels rain effectively for the duration of a typical storm. Sustained heavy rain over many hours (12+) can eventually wet through. For all-weather use in rainy climates, Marine Grade Vinyl is the better pick.<\/p>\n Yes. Marine Grade Vinyl handles wading and shallow water crossings well. PVC, PU Leather, and Polyester all repel splashes and shallow water. None of the materials are designed for sustained submersion (water crossings deeper than the wheel).<\/p>\n No. The cover is designed to stay on through weather. Removing it before rain defeats the purpose — the whole point is to protect the spare during weather, not before it arrives.<\/p>\n Marine Grade Vinyl seals tightly — the cover prevents both rain in and evaporation out. After heavy rain, lift the cover briefly to let any trapped moisture vent. PU Leather and Polyester breathe slightly, which helps in normal weather and is not usually needed beyond that.<\/p>\n Marine Grade Vinyl ($169) is the long-haul pick for wet climates.
