Buyers see “17” on the wheel and assume they need a 17-inch cover. Then the 17-inch cover arrives, slides over the lug nuts, and stops cold — because the actual tire is 32 inches across, not 17.

The cover wraps the entire tire, from one edge of the tread across the face to the other edge. That number is always bigger than the rim size, sometimes by a lot. Once you understand that, sizing becomes mechanical: read a code on the sidewall, do a small calculation, and you have your answer. Or pull out a tape measure and skip the math entirely.

There are three ways to get to the right size, and any of them works. Use the one that fits what you have access to — the spare in front of you, the tire code on the sidewall, or just the make and model of the vehicle.

Here is the full guide.

Spare tire cover size equals overall tire diameter, not rim size. Use a tape measure across the tire face (edge to edge through the center), or read the size code on the sidewall (for example, LT255/75R17 → 32″ cover) and look it up in the chart below. We make every size from 14″ to 37″ and beyond, with custom sizing always free.

Method 1 — Read the sidewall (the fastest way)

Every tire has its size molded into the sidewall. Look for a code like:

LT255/75R17 121/118Q

The first number (255) is section width in millimeters. The second (75) is aspect ratio — sidewall height as a percentage of width. The R is for radial. The 17 is rim diameter in inches.

To get overall tire diameter:

diameter = rim_inches + 2 × (width_mm × aspect_ratio / 100) / 25.4

For LT255/75R17: 17 + 2 × (255 × 0.75 / 25.4) = 17 + 15.05 = 32.05 inches → 32″ cover.

Or just use the reference table below — we have already done the math for the most common sizes.

Method 2 — Tape measure across the tire

If you cannot read the sidewall (mud, faded code, vintage tire), measure directly:

Have the spare upright on a flat surface — tailgate-mounted, hitch-mounted, or set on the ground.

Place a tape measure across the front face of the tire, from edge of tread to edge of tread, passing through the dead-center of the wheel.

Read the number in inches. That is your cover size.

If your measurement falls between two cover sizes (32.5″, for instance), round up to the next size. A slightly oversized cover is easy to tighten with the drawcord; an undersized cover will not seat properly.

Method 3 — Look up your stock vehicle size

If your spare is the factory tire, every common vehicle has a known cover size:

Jeep

Wrangler YJ / TJ stock 30-inch → 30″

Wrangler JK / JL stock LT255/75R17 → 32″

Wrangler Rubicon JL LT285/70R17 → 33″

Lifted Wrangler on 35s → 35″

Gladiator JT stock → 32″ (or 33″ Rubicon)

Ford

Bronco 6th gen stock LT255/75R17 → 33″

Bronco Sasquatch / Wildtrak (35s) → 35″

Vintage Bronco (1966–1996) → 31″–33″

Ford Expedition rear-mounted → 32″

Toyota

4Runner TRD Pro / Trail Edition LT265/70R17 → 32″

FJ Cruiser stock → 32″

Land Cruiser 70/80 series → 32″–33″

Mercedes G-Wagon

W463 / W463A stock 265/60R18 → 33″

AMG G63 with 22-inch wheels → 35″

W460 / W461 vintage → 31″–32″

Land Rover Defender

Defender 90 → 32″

Defender 110 / 130 → 32″–33″

Modern Defender L663 (2020+) → 33″

RV / camper / trailer

Class A motorhome → 32″–36″

Class C motorhome → 30″–33″

Travel trailer → 27″–30″

Fifth wheel → 30″–33″

Pop-up camper → 20″–24″

Teardrop trailer → 14″–20″

Boat trailer / utility trailer → 13″–16″

Tire-code reference table (most common sizes)

Tire size code

Overall diameter

Cover size

205/65R16

26.5″

27″ cover

225/75R15

28.3″

28″ cover

235/75R15

28.9″

29″ cover

235/75R16

29.9″

30″ cover

245/75R16

30.5″

31″ cover

265/70R17

31.6″

32″ cover

LT255/75R17

32.0″

32″ cover

265/60R18

30.5″

31″ cover (or G-Wagon-stock 33″)

LT285/70R17

32.7″

33″ cover

33×12.50R15

33.0″

33″ cover

LT315/70R17

34.4″

34″ cover

35×12.50R17

35.0″

35″ cover

37×12.50R17

37.0″

37″ cover

Custom sizes are always available at no extra cost. Send your diameter at checkout if your size is not on the chart.

What to do if you are between sizes

If your tire diameter falls between two cover sizes (32.5″, for instance), round up to the next size. The drawcord (Polyester, Marine Grade Vinyl) or elastic band (PU Leather, PVC) will tighten an oversized cover; an undersized cover cannot stretch enough to seat properly, and the print distorts.

For very non-standard sizes (custom 34.5″ build, vintage trailer with a non-standard rim), send the exact diameter at checkout. Custom sizing is free. We cut to any diameter from 14″ through 37″ and beyond.

Frequently asked questions

Do I size by rim or tire diameter?

Tire diameter, not rim. The cover wraps the tread and sidewall, so it has to match the tire’s outer diameter. A 17-inch rim with 33-inch tires takes a 33″ cover, not a 17″ cover.

My tire size code is hard to read. What do I do?

Use a tape measure across the tire face, edge of tread to edge of tread through the center. That number in inches is your cover size. If you are between sizes, round up.

Can I get a custom size that is not on the chart?

Yes — custom sizing is free at checkout. Just send the diameter when you order. We cut from 14″ through 37″ and beyond. Vintage builds, lifted custom rigs, and unusual trailer sizes are no problem.

What if my cover arrives slightly loose?

Tighten the drawcord (Polyester, Marine Grade Vinyl) or check the elastic band seating (PU Leather, PVC) behind the tread. If the cover is more than 1″ oversized, reach out within 30 days for a free replacement — no restocking fee, no return-shipping charge.

Does cover size affect price?

No. The price is set by material grade, not cover size. A 14″ trailer cover and a 37″ lifted-Wrangler cover are the same price within each material grade.
