How to Install a Spare Tire Cover in Under a Minute

If you have not installed a spare tire cover before, the actual process is anti-climactic. There is no hardware to attach, no special tools to find, no instructions to memorize. The whole installation takes about 30 seconds once you have done one, and the only real decision is whether your cover uses an elastic band or a drawstring at the back.
That said, a small number of things can go wrong on the first install: the cover ends up crooked, the band sits in front of the tread instead of behind it, the drawstring does not fully tighten, or the design ends up rotated three inches off-center. None of these are hard to fix — they are all caught by paying attention to one or two things during the install.

Installing a spare tire cover takes under one minute and requires no tools. Slide the cover over the spare with the design facing out, then either let the elastic band grip behind the tread (PVC, PU Leather, Marine Grade Vinyl) or tighten the drawstring at the back (Polyester).
What you need (nothing)
The cover is the only item required. No screws, no clamps, no adhesive, no tools. The cover ships with all attachment hardware (elastic band or drawstring) sewn in place.
The one optional thing: a clean towel if the spare is muddy or dusty. Wipe the tread before installing so the cover seats cleanly against the tire.
Installing an elastic-band cover (PVC, PU Leather, Marine Grade Vinyl)
- Position the cover with the design facing out, away from the vehicle. The elastic band runs around the inside edge.
- Pull the cover over the top of the spare, working it down around the sides. The elastic stretches as you pull.
- Tuck the elastic behind the tread all the way around the tire. The band grips into the groove between the tread and the rim. Run a finger around the edge to confirm it is fully seated.
- Done. The cover should pull flush against the spare for a snug factory look.
Installing a drawstring cover (Polyester)
- Position the cover with the design facing out and the drawstring side facing the vehicle.
- Drape the cover over the top of the spare and pull it down around the sides. Drawstring covers fit looser than elastic-band covers because the cord does the tightening.
- Reach behind the spare and pull the drawstring tight. The cord runs around the inside circumference of the cover. Pull both ends until the cover seats flush against the wheel face.
- Engage the cord-lock clamp — the cover ships with the clamp installed. The clamp holds the cord at tension and clicks when it is set.
- Done. Drawstring covers can be re-tightened any time the cover loosens (after a hand wash, after long shipping).
Common installation mistakes
- Cover does not seat flat. The cover is likely undersized. Verify the diameter and exchange — free returns, no restocking fee.
- Elastic band visible from the front. The band slipped onto the tread surface instead of behind it. Tuck it into the groove between tread and rim.
- Drawstring loosens at highway speeds. Double-check the cord-lock clamp is fully engaged. The clamp should click when set.
- Design installed crooked. Rotate the cover by gripping the front face and twisting. The cover spins freely before the elastic or drawstring is fully seated.
